Water, Wood, Earth

Mostly water. We had 7 inches of rain in two days on Merritt Island. This unnamed storm was the real hurricane of the year, and my yard looked like this after the storm, metaphorically speaking.

It Won't Stop Raining

Its been pouring rain for 2 days now, and everything is wet to the core. The leak in my roof, while small, is starting to worry me again. I wanted with color and marks to get a sense of what the unending torrential downpour feels like.

Minimal

One way to paint an overused subject like a sunset is to simplify it. Make it more about language (shape, color, line) than about subject so that the sunset part doesn't just take over in the viewer's mind. Ask yourself, which do you see first, the sunset over the river or the shapes and color?

Homage to Matisse or Porch Plants Revisited

I like the light in this one and the curvilinear movements. It has a more graceful and decorative feel than yesterday's. My own version of Matisse.

Porch Plants

This almost looks like it has tissue paper on it, but I guarantee it does not. I like the spikey harshness of the plants. My yard is a little scary as you can see.

The House Knows Nothing

The house, or rather the porch, is in the top left of the picture. The yard takes over, and engulfs most of the space. It is alive and has its own reality of which the house knows nothing.

The River Misses Charlie

Charlie and the Indian River were one. It was his home and a large part of his life. He could never wander too far from his beloved river, and everyday at the end of his life he sat with it and looked at it always. The river has lost a kindred spirit. I miss him too.

Rock and Roll

This might be the last of my thick waterlogged paintings. The rainy season in Florida has officially ended with the cooler fall weather today. Now my water soaked images don't seem quite right. End pieces to a series sometimes seem more bizarre like this one. I'll see what happens tomorrow. I like the "one day at a time" approach.

Sun and Shadow

The morning sun is clear and bright across the river. It spotlights the big tree in the garden. Everything else is in shadow.
Happy Birthday, Dad.

Child in the Garden

The garden in various forms has been around for a couple of weeks, and it is kind of nice to think that a child has walked in among the flowers.
